I’m addicted to this story, Nick. It’s so atmospheric and so well-observed.
The mention of a big rubber torch reminds me of the one my stepdad had and which saw me through pitch-black nights on a Welsh campsite (farmer’s field) in the 70s. I swore then, being a city kid, I’d never live somewhere so dark.
And yet here I am, in pitch-black rural west Wales. And the stars are glorious.
it totally makes my day that you are enjoying this little story so much and the little touches mean something to someone else too. i wish you could still get those torches but lets face it... theyre rubbish compared to the LED ones now eh! don't trip over any tombstones in darkest wales, look you!
You’re so welcome! There are two churches across the road from our house. And I have tripped over a crooked gravestone or two! I’m itching to get inside the abandoned one. I spend a lot of time haunting the graveyard… 🪦
I'm sure there was an episode of Kolchak (The Night Stalker) about people (or 'once were people') living in the old depths of the Underground. 'Mind the doors!' I think they said. I love that name, 'underground man'.
This is getting ever more dark and gothic and, well, excellent!
Oh my, oh my, oh my... and to think, you once intended this to be a Christmas story!
its november... christmas is coming...
Uh oh...
Down in the depths out of the mouth of babes come an hour that Latin phrase “ecce homo” the under ground man.
So insanely good
Yes, yes, more, MORE!
