Future Britains
From the small but mighty island that brought you M. Banks, Adams, Aldiss, Huxley, Orwell, Ballard, Wyndham, Ridley Scott, C. Clarke, Stross, Meiville, HG Wells, Shelley....
‘Containment’ - a short(ish) story set in my home town in an imagined future.
…He looked behind him: the Corbridge factory ate the horizon. Columns of steam rose from it and gathered as a single artificial cloud that dissolved into the evening’s humidity. He saw a flash and then flames before he heard the explosion. Faint sirens followed it. A second explosion made up his mind….
As one of twenty plus British science fiction writers I am immensely proud to be included in this collection of stories which, thanks to Martin Grace , is approaching its first digital incarnation before its birth on paper.
I don’t know about the other writers, but it has been an agonising process for me - one of self doubt and terrible feelings of not being good enough.
20+ versions and a complete rewrite, and still I feel it’s not good enough.
But that is me. You can be the judge.
One of the very best aspects of Substack is the community spirit that exists here amongst like-minded, supportive, warm, welcoming, encouraging -and above all - TALENTED writers from all over the world.
Right here in little ol’ Blighty, a handful of us have come together to create Future Britains
Pre orders can be had below - support independant writers - none of us are in it for the money - we are in it for the love of the craft - there is only the work, as one fine chap said to me many many times. But pre orders will help us break even at least and bring it to the world…bring it to you.

I already pre-ordered a while back and am awaiting the anthology with eager anticipation! 😁
You are definitely more than good enough!
Like we were saying, you've got a novella at least in your story. I reckon you should perhaps put it to the side for a month or two and let your hard-worked brain have a rest, then come back to it refreshed.
And you're so right about the community. It's something I've come to love and cherish myself.
